5/16/09 - Game 1 NV 3, St. Lawrence 2
It had been a couple of weeks since the Bulldogs had last played in a game - there were no games during Mother's
Day weekend. St. Lawrence was looking to revenge their loss record against the 'Dawgs. The first period was
filled with penalites but neither team scored on their power plays, and the score remained tied at 0-0.
The second
period saw a couple of goals - the first scored by SL, however North Valley quickly responded when Captain Carl Harter (#19)
scored to tie it up. The third period saw a nice give-n-go exchange between Kyle Boruff (#27) and Carl Harter
and Carl was able to score his second goal of the game. Saint Lawrence scored as well in the third to tie it up, but
Carl was able to put his third goal of the game into the net to give the Bulldogs the final lead of the game. North
Valley out shot the Celtics 32-13.
5/16/09 - Game 2 NV 3, Bellarmine
4
North Valley got off to a rocky start by giving up three straight goals to a determined Bellarmine
team. In addition, the Bulldogs took three penalties which tired out the Bulldog defense. North Valley was
finally able to put one past the goalie and get on the scoreboard, however Bellarmine quickly responded with another goal
to make it 4-1 at the end of the second period.
In the third period, the Bulldogs continued to own the puck and
apply pressure on the Bellarmine net and mid-way through the period, North Valley scored - AC John Morris (#88) from
Carl Harter, and AC Rich Winingar (#87) also on an assist from Carl. In the last minute of the game, Bellarmine was
called for a penalty and with North Valley's goalie pulled, the Bulldogs were able to mount an attack of five skaters
against Bellarmine's three, but it was just too late in the game and though North Valley dominated on the shot clock they
were not able to score the equalizer. This was North Valley's first loss of tthe season.
5/2/09 - NV 6, Bellarmine 4
The Bulldogs
faced off against the Bellarmine Bells - generally considered a hockey power within the Silicon Valley. Bellarmine has
5 different teams within the entire High School League at RollinIce.
North Valley took control of the game early
by dominating on the "shot clock" and making their opportunities count. The Bulldog's talented forward
Kyle Boruff (#27) put put on a scoring clinic and had himself a "hat trick" in the first period! Captain Carl
Harter (#19) and Alternate Capatain Brad Zachary (#17) assisted on these goals - Carl 2, Brad 1. The Bulldogs were in
control of the game and the period ended with the score 3-0.
The second period saw the game turn upside down as
Bellarmine gained control of loose pucks and began to put up some decent shots on North Valley's netminder - Zack Langston
(#20). Bellarmine scored four unanswered goals during the second period, and during this time the Bulldogs were unable
to score on a couple of power plays, so the period ended with Bellarmine up 4-3!
In the third period, the Bulldogs
decided to take back control of the game and started moving their feet to get to the puck and get more shots on net.
Brad Zachary (#17) was able to score on a nice pass from Carl Harter (#19) to tie the game at 4 each. Then the Bulldogs
had to kill off a two-man advantage for Bellarmine as both Devan Rhoe (#25) and AC Jon Morris (#88) were in the "sin
bin" for interference and delay of game penalties, respectivley. North Valley was able to kill off the entire penalty
and Captain Carl Harter (#19) was able to score on a break away to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Kyle Boruff, not
to be outdone, put in a nice "insurance goal" late in the third period - his fourth of the night. This was
a very physical game and the Bulldogs had to get "awakened" before they decided to put the game away. The
fans were treated to another great :come from behind" victory. Zack Langston was solid in his net for the entire
third period as there were plenty of shots - especially during the penalty kill. The come back victory was a total team
effort as some players did not end up on the score sheet but were able to put plenty of sustained pressure on Bellarmine -
AC Rich Winingar (#87) showed plenty of hussle as he was constantly getting shots to the net and displayed solid "back
checking" as a forward. Luke Flood (#21) played another great game in his defensive role as he stepped up to spell
the two senior defensemen, and AC Kevin Boruff put in some valuable time on the penalty kill during Bellarmine's two man
advantage. Great game Bulldogs!
4/25/09 - NV 12, Fremont 4
The
Bulldogs had the opportunity to play against the prior season champions - and it was a completely different outcome from the
last time the two teams met. In the last season, NV's Seniors (6 players) were on their mission trip to Costa Rica,
and with a very short bench NV was not able to stand up to the Fremont attack, and they won the game. However, the Bulldogs
had their full complement of players on hand for this game and it was a very physical game as the 'Dawgs took it to Fremont
early on.
Captain Carl Harter (#19)
4/18/09 - NV 7, St. Lawrence 5
The
Bulldogs were off to a slow start when St. Lawrence opened the scoring off of a NV turnover, however NV quickly responded
with three unanswered goals of their own: AC Brad Zachary (#17) from Captain Carl Harter (#19), AC Kevin Boruff (#12)
unassisted, and again Brad (#17) on a tip in on a shot from AC Jon Morris (#88). St. Lawrence scored two
more goals as the first period came to a close, the score was tied up a 3 each
The second period saw
no scoring, however, North Valley did have a Power Play and a Penatly Kill.
In the third period, St. Lawrence
broke the tie with a quick score. The Bulldogs again responded with an unassisted goal by AC Jon Morris
(#88), which tied the game up at 4 each. Then, the Bulldogs were the beneficiaries of another Power Play, and this
time they were able to make it work, as AC Brad Zachary (#88) was able to score on a great assist from AC Jon Morris (#88)
giving the Bulldogs the lead, 5-4 with just a few minutes remaining. Carl Harter (#19) was able to take control
of the puck from within his own zone, skate it out and put a great shot past the St. Lawrence goalie in order to go up 6-4. However,
St. Lawrence was able to score on an ensuing Power Play to draw back to within one goal, 6-5.
With
their goalie pulled for the extra attacker in the last minute of play, St. Lawrence was putting a massive pounding on
North Valley's netminder, but Zack Langston's (#20) net was closed for the night Carl was able to gain
control of the puck and from deep within his own zone, he was able to fire the puck down and into the empty St. Lawrence net,
to make the final score, 7-5.
Spring 2009 - NV Black
4/11/09 - NV 6,
Monta Vista 3
The Bulldogs got themselves into a bit of a hole when Monta Vista scored two quick goals in the first
period, the first being on a power play after Captain Carl Harter (#19) was called for roughing. Monta Vista's team
was quick and it took North Valley a few minutes to understand that they needed to be aggressive and move their feet.
North Valley finally struck back after Josiah Gutierrez (#7) fed a nice hard pass across to AC Jon Morris (#88) and he was
able to tip the puck past Monta Vista's goalie for the Bulldog's first goal.
The first period was
drawing to a close with Monta Vista leading 2-1 and again on the power play (#19 Carl Harter, his second of the game), when
Kyle Boruff (#27) was able to score "short handed" and even the game up at 2 apiece as the period ended. The
second period saw North Valley take two straight penalties (#88, Jon Morris and #87, Rich Winingar), which put the Bulldogs
down two men. However, the 'Dawgs were able to kill off both penalties and survive to the end of the second period.
The third period started with North Valley on the power play and they were able to capitalize on a nice tip in
shot by Kyle Boruff (#27) off of a hard slap shot by AC Brad Zachary (#17). Monta Vista answered with an even strenght
goal to knot the game up at 3 each. But the Bulldogs were not finished, and they were able to put the game
away with three unanswered goals: Captain Carl Harter (#19) put up a nice shot (unassisted, his sixth after two games), AC
Jon Morris (#88) scored with an assist from Carl Harter (#19), and the final goal was another short handed goal by Kyle Boruff
(#27).
All in all, North Valley played a great game - after getting "woke up" at the beginning.
The Bulldogs did not give up and pressed even harder to ensure that they gave thier best effort. Hard work pays off,
and the Bulldogs were able to provide their fans with a great "come from behind" victory, 6-3.
4/4/09
- NV 10, Mitty 2
In this first game of the new Spring Season, the Bulldogs were looking to get off to
a fresh start by facing off against Arch Bishop Mitty's top team. Mitty had just come off of a D3A Winter Championship
and was looking to move up to D2 - so the Bulldogs decided to "welcome them" to the next level.
North Valley scored three straight goals: Captain Carl Harter (#19) scored two, one unassisted and the other off
a helper from AC Brad Zachary (#17). The third goal was scored by AC Brad Zachary (#17) on an assist from AC Rich
Winingar (#87). Mitty scored at the end of the first period to bring the score to 3-1. The second
period saw the Bulldogs score four more times: Kyle Boruff (#27) from Harter (#19), Carl Harter (#19) unassisted, AC Rich
Winingar (#87) assisted by Harter (#19), and finally another unassited goal by the Captain (#19) to drive the score to 7-1.
In addition to the scoring, North Valley was able to kill off three straight penalties.
The final period, Mitty
was able to tally one more goal, but that was all they were going to get as North Valley's goalie, Zack Langston (#20)
did an outstanding job in the nets. The Bulldog's were not done for the night as they scored three more goals:
Harter (#19) unassited, AC Rich Winingar (#87) assisted by AC Jon Morris (#88), and lastly an unassisted goal by Jon Morris
(#88).
